On May 17, microbiologists at Cardiff University in Wales, UK, are brewing a new beer using extracts found in Namibia's killer bees.
Scientists have harnessed brewer's yeast, which is present in the gut microbiota of killer bees, and used it to develop a unique craft beer.
Cardiff University microbiologists visited the University of Namibia as part of a joint Cardiff University and University of Namibia Sustainable Environmental Development project. This is where scientists became interested in killer bees.
Les Baillie, Professor of microbiology at Cardiff University's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, said: "Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as brewer's yeast, is present in the gut microbiome of bees. In a project in Namibia, we isolated brewer's yeast from killer bees that died of natural causes. When we got back to Cardiff University, we used isolated killer bee brewer's yeast and yeast from Welsh bees to brew batches of beer."
The Pharmabees project is exploring how the pollination of certain plants can lead to the development of drugs to treat superbugs and antibiotic resistance. The project has placed beehives and specific plants around the university campus to encourage the production of super honey and assist superbug research in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
With Killer Beer, the researchers aim to combine scientific understanding of microbiology and research from Cardiff University into bee-related products to produce unique products. The scientists are now looking for a beer manufacturer to partner with to bring Killer bee beer to market, with the proceeds helping to support bee research at the University of Cardiff in Wales.
Baillie concluded: "Our Killer bee beer is an interesting side project to our broader pharmaceutical bee research. Our research on bees reveals how honey, beeswax and other bee byproducts can play a role in solving some of the world's biggest challenges, including tackling antibiotic resistance and superbugs. By using brewer's yeast from bees that die naturally, we can not only produce a beer that raises awareness and funds such research, but also broaden our understanding of bees at the microbial level."
